On July 5, Sherif Rizk spoke with Renée Sylvestre-Williams for the Toronto Star about the financial and legal considerations for individuals choosing to leave the workforce to become a stay-at-home partner.

Whether a stay-at-home arrangement is entered into as a common-law partnership or marriage, the legal distinctions under Ontario’s Family Law Act that affect property rights and financial protections are different.

Rizk discusses the importance of clarifying entitlements in advance of moving in together or ceasing work, such as through a cohabitation agreement or will, so the stay-at-home partner isn’t left vulnerable.
