Media Interview: Severe School Bullying, Institutional Silence, and Legal Accountability with CityNews Ottawa

On June 27, Sherif Rizk joined Sam Laprade on CityNews Ottawa to discuss a bullying case between two minors at an Ottawa public school that escalated into a lawsuit after injuries sent one student to hospital.

Despite a zero-tolerance approach to abuse announced by the Ontario government, authorities have been reluctant to take meaningful action, which has left the matter at risk of taking years to resolve.

Rizk and Laprade discuss the challenges schools face when serious bullying occurs and recommendations for how authorities can promote mediation, uphold legal responsibilities, and protect students at school.

“Parents should not need lawyers to resolve bullying in schools. Student issues should never escalate to hospitalization.” –Sherif Rizk
